The service
The layer that takes the wear
Polyurethane is often the layer you actually walk on. Laid over an epoxy base, a PU topcoat adds resistance to abrasion, scuffing and many everyday chemicals, and UV-stable polyurethanes hold their colour in sunlight far better than epoxy on its own.
PU is also a little more flexible than epoxy, which helps on floors that see temperature swings or constant impact. That's why it turns up on workshop, commercial and outdoor floors as well as in homes.
Not every floor needs it. Whether a PU coat makes sense, or whether a polyaspartic or plain epoxy system would do the job, comes down to how the floor is used. We'll explain the options at the quote.

How the job runs
Every slab is different, so the detail changes from job to job. This is the usual order of work.

Match the system
Traffic, spills, sun and cleaning decide whether PU is the right top layer, and how much of it.

Prepare the slab
Grind, clean and repair so the whole system bonds to sound concrete.

Epoxy base
An epoxy base coat, plain or with flake, builds the body of the floor.

PU coat
The polyurethane goes on as the wearing surface, with grip added where it's needed.

Cure & handover
Cure times vary with the product and the weather, so you'll get timing for foot traffic and full use.

What's the difference between epoxy and polyurethane?
Epoxy is hard and bonds very well to concrete, which makes it a strong base. Polyurethane is tougher on the surface and more flexible, and UV-stable versions resist yellowing. That's why the two are often used together: epoxy underneath, PU on top.
Can a PU coating go outside?
UV-stable polyurethanes are commonly used on outdoor and sun-exposed floors because they hold their colour better than epoxy alone. For outdoor jobs we'll compare PU and polyaspartic for your particular spot.
Does a PU topcoat make a floor last longer?
It takes the day-to-day abrasion so the layers underneath don't, which is why it's used on floors that see heavy wear. How long any floor lasts still comes down to the prep, the system chosen and how the floor is used.
